Browns QB Campbell cleared to face Pats

The Cleveland Browns will not have to turn to a fourth different starting quarterback this season after Jason Campbell was medically cleared Friday in his recovery from a concussion.

Campbell will start Sunday against the New England Patriots. Campbell and twice-benched quarterback Brandon Weeden have both been recovering from concussions, which led the Browns to sign Caleb Hanie and Alex Tanney and have them split first-team reps in midweek practice.

Fortunately for the Browns, Campbell was back on the field Friday.

“He’s had a good two days of practice, been very sharp,” Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said. “You go with the doctors. I feel confident in them, and that’s the first thing. As I mentioned, it was important that he’s been here.

“On Wednesday, he was able to walk through and do the things. He’s been in the meetings, and then to go out on the practice field and be as sharp as he’s been is important. I have all of the confidence in the world in Jason.”

Whether Weeden will be able to serve as the backup or the Browns will need to turn to Hanie or Tanney behind Campbell on Sunday had yet to be determined. There is a possibility Cleveland could have three active quarterbacks on game day.

Campbell gives the Browns some consistency at least, although he began the season as Weeden’s backup and was passed over by Brian Hoyer and then Weeden again before being given a shot at the starting job.

“We’ve had multiple (quarterbacks), but again, the situation was what it was,” said Chudzinski. “We’re getting ready to play; press on; whatever happens during the course of the game, we have to be ready for. That’s part of this league and dealing with injuries.”

Texans fire Kubiak

Gary Kubiak became the first coaching casualty of the NFL season as the Houston Texans fired him on Friday with the team in the midst of a franchise-record 11-game losing streak.

The decision comes a day after Houston lost to Jacksonville and fell to an NFL-worst 2-11, a huge swing from last season when they went 12-4 and won the AFC South.

“This has been a very disappointing year,” said Texans chief executive Bob McNair. “We started with such high hopes. To have this string of losses is unacceptable.”

Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will serve as interim coach for the Texans’ final three games of the 2013 season, the team said in a statement.

In Thursday’s game, a 27-20 Jaguars victory, Londonderry native Ryan Griffin, a Texans tight end, made one catch for 10 yards.

Rodgers ruled out

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will not play in Sunday’s game against Atlanta, and Matt Flynn will be the Packers’ starting quarterback against the Falcons.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy made the announcement Friday.

Rodgers will miss his fifth consecutive start because of a collarbone injury. He has said he wants to play, but the Packers will not put him in a game until he is cleared by the Packers’ doctors. “Aaron’s frustrated,” McCarthy said. “We’re in meetings all day together. He’s like every other player fighting to get on the field.”

With four regular-season games remaining, it is unclear whether the Rodgers will return this season.

The Packers (5-6-1) desperately need to beat the Falcons to have a chance to land a playoff berth.
