Sports Briefs: No miracle finish for Vonn

Vonn 40th in downhill

There was no miracle finish for Lindsey Vonn in her return to the World Cup circuit.

Racing for the first time since a crash that led to reconstructive knee surgery last February, Vonn was 40th of the 60 starters in Friday’s downhill ski race at frigid Lake Louise, Alberta.

Of course, it seemed a minor miracle that Vonn was able to race at all only 17 days after reinjuring the right knee in a training crash.

She was 3.19 seconds behind leader Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany.

Vonn, the reigning Olympic downhill champion, had won seven straight speed races at Lake Louise.

UW hires Petersen

The University of Washington pulled off what several programs with more national cachet have not been able to accomplish in recent years — lure Chris Petersen away from Boise State.

Petersen was announced as the Huskies’ new head football coach on Friday, four days after Steve Sarkisian left Washington to take over Southern California’s program.

Petersen, 49, compiled a 92-12 record in eight seasons at Boise State.

Pinstripe Bowl for ND

After playing in the BCS championship game last January, Notre Dame will spend this holiday season at the Pinstripe Bowl.

The Fighting Irish, who finished the regular season with an 8-4 record in 2013, will take the Big 12’s spot in the Pinstripe and face an opponent from the American Athletic Conference, according to CBSSports.com.

The game wil be played Saturday, Dec. 28 at 12:15 p.m. at Yankee Stadium in New York.

The bowl lineup officially will be announced Sunday.
