College Roundup: Springfield shoots SNHU past FPU

Brooke Springfield of Jaffrey matched her career-high with 18 points as Southern New Hampshire University downed Franklin Pierce University 76-61 in a Northeast-10 women's basketball contest Wednesday at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Penmen have won five of their last six games and improved to 5-2 and 3-1 in the NE-10. The Ravens are 3-5 and 2-3 in the league.

The win was the first for the Penmen against Franklin Pierce at home since a 73-67 double-overtime win on Feb. 18, 2006.

Springfield, who led four Penmen in double figures, finished 8-of-14 from the floor and also handed out six assists.

Junior Lorreta Rocha had a career-best 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Sophomore Erin Doherty tallied a career-high 15 points. Amra Elezovic of Manchester added 11 points for SNHU.

Franklin Pierce was paced by sophomore Kara Charette, who finished with 25 points and seven rebounds.Bentley 76, Merrimack 52: At North Andover, Mass., the top-ranked Falcons (8-0 overall) breezed in NE-10 action. Manchester's Christiana Bakolas led Bentley in assists, with five.Howard 45, UNH 40: In Durham, Ariel Gaston matched a career-high with 10 rebounds in the loss. UNH fell to 3-4 with its fourth loss in five games. St. Anselm 79, St. Michael's 66: The Hawks are 6-4 on the season after winning their third straight game.NHTI 46, Quinsigamond Community College 28: Northwood's Allura LeBlanc (20 points, 9 rebounds) and Derry's Danielle Kimball (9 points) led the way for the Lynx (6-4) on Tuesday.Daniel Webster 70, Newbury 51: Ashley England poured in 25 points for the Eagles (3-4) on Tuesday. Manchester Central product Katherine Johnson added her first career double-double, with 11 points and 12 boards.Keene State 81, RPI 53: In Keene, Amherst's Christan Wojtas scored 13 points to lead the Owls (4-2) on Tuesday. Chesterfield's Ashley Clough scored 20 points for the Engineers (2-5). Men's basketballCentral. Conn. St. 65, UNH 56: In New Britain, Conn., Scott Morris scored 11 points for the Wildcats. Freshmen Jaleen Smith and Jacoby Armstrong each finished with 10 points in the loss. UNH fell to 2-5.Franklin Pierce 77, SNHU 63: In Manchester, Elijah Bonsignore tallied 22 points for the Penmen in the loss. Ryen Vilmont led the Ravens with 22 points and teammate Ellis Cooper added 13 points. The Ravens are 9-1 and the Penmen fell to 3-4.St. Anselm 99, St. Michael's 90: In Manchester, Mike McCahey led the Hawks with 23 points and John Nielsen had eight rebounds for the 5-2 Hawks, who have won four straight games.
