Mile marker: Londonderry trail’s first step

The end of November was the start of something wonderful for Londonderry. The first mile of the Londonderry Rail Trail was opened for public use.
John Daley, a board member of the non-profit Londonderry Trailways, which led the drive for the rail trail conversion, said at the grand opening, “Trails enhance a community. Now Londonderry has a safe, paved place for families to stay active and have fun together.”
Yes, it does. These rail trails are long, winding public parks that connect communities to each other. When complete, the Londonderry trail will connect the Windham and Derry trails, which is to create a single path up to Manchester. Unlike many town parks, these trails are built by a combination of public and private funds. Without the private initiative, they would never be completed.
Londonderry Trailways, town officials and all of the residents who contributed to the fund-raising should feel pretty good this month. But they all know that this is only the first of many miles. More community support will be needed if this great project is to be realized.
