SPOFFORD — Two motorists were seriously injured in a head-on collision on Route 9 Tuesday morning in the Chesterfield village of Spofford.
Chesterfield police along with members of Chesterfield Rescue, Spofford Rescue and Keene Fire & Rescue responded to the scene of the crash at 10:37 a.m.
In a press release Tuesday afternoon, Lt. Duane Chickering said the preliminary investigation indicates Emily Ranagan, 19, of Spofford, was driving a 2011 Hyundai Accent east on Route 9 when the Hyundai went into the westbound traffic lane, causing two other vehicles to take evasive action. The Hyundai continued eastbound in the westbound lane until it struck a 2007 Hyundai Sonata driven by Carol Menck, 74, of Brattleboro, Vt.
Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles. Once extricated, they were taken to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene; however, due to serious bodily injury suffered by Ranagan and Menck, they were transported to the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.
The area of Route 9 was shut down for approximately two-and-a-half hours.
All vehicles, excluding tractor-trailer trucks, were diverted around the accident scene via Cady Lane.
Chesterfield police continue to investigate the accident. Anybody who witnessed the accident is encouraged to contact Chickering at 363-4233, ext. 62.
