Filing closed, fields set for District 1 Executive Council special election

CONCORD -- The field is set for the special election to succeed the late Raymond Burton as the Executive Councilor for the northern part of the state.

Burton died of kidney cancer last month, prompting widespread mourning but also a necessary special election to be held March 11.

The filing period for the District 1 seat closed on Monday at 5 p.m. No one filed on the final day, leaving Grafton County Commissioner Michael Cryans of Hanover as the Democratic nominee and three Republicans to square-off in a Jan. 21 primary election.

The Republicans on the primary ballot will be former Belknap County Commissioner Christopher Boothby of Meredith, former state Sen. and 2008 Republican gubernatorial nominee Joe Kenney of Wakefield and Mark Aldrich of Lebanon, a former state director for former U.S. Sens. Gordon Humphrey and Bob Smith.

State Democratic Party chairman Raymond Buckley called Cryans, who was born and grew up in Littleton, "a terrific guy, and will be a strong voice for families and small businesses in the North Country.

"Working side by side with Ray Burton for almost two decades, he understands the diverse communities of the district and how to be an effective advocate for them on the council. His dedication to economic development causes and commitment to constituent services as a Commissioner in Grafton County has earned him reelection year after year after year," Buckley said.

State Republican Party executive director Matt Mowers said, "There is no question that Ray Burton left big shoes to fill, but fortunately Republicans have a strong field of fiscally conservative candidates running to succeed him. We are looking forward to a productive primary and are confident that our outstanding nominee will win the special election."
