Red-hot Monarchs top Wolf Pack on the road
The Manchester Monarchs defeated the host Hartford Wolf Pack 3-1 in AHL action Saturday night.
The first-place Monarchs improved to 15-3-4 and will play at Bridgeport on Sunday at 3 p.m. Hartford fell to 9-10-2.
Jordan Weal gave Manchester some breathing room with a goal at 7:51 of the third period to make the score 3-1 Monarchs. Weal collected a giveaway from Hartford's Brendon Nash and scored his fourth goal of the season.
From there the Monarchs hung on for the win with rookie goalie J.F. Berube making 31 saves.
Manchester led 1-0 after one period of play on Cameron Burt's first AHL goal at 5:16.
Hartford tied the game at 1-1 at the 17:41 mark of the second period. Darroll Powe scored the goal, beating Berube from the right circle.
The tying goal came just after Manchester's Nick Deslauriers was stopped on a penalty shot try by Wolfpack goalie Jason Missiaen with his right pad.
Deslauriers would have his revenge on the next chance, scoring a goal with 1:00 remaining in the second period to give Manchester a 2-1 lead.
After a scramble in front of the Hartford cage that saw Zach O'Brien hit the post, Deslauriers banged the rebound home for his team-leading ninth goal.
