Bedford Women's Club to recognize Air Force veteran Dieter

BEDFORD — The Bedford Women's Club will recognize M. Ralph Dieter Dec. 5 as one of the veterans who has made the United States secure through intelligence.

Recognition will take place at the annual tree-lighting ceremony conducted by the women's club at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5.

The community is invited to attend. Members of the Bedford High School Chorus will close the ceremony with song.

Dieter joined the U.S. Air Force in April, 1950 at the age of 17.

In June, 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea. After Air Force Radio Intercept Operator Training, Dieter was assigned to Japan in July 1951. His radio organization operated in Japan and Korea during the Korean Conflict.

In July, 1953, the armistice signed at Panmunjom effected a cease fire in the Korean Conflict. Sgt. Dieter, back in the United States, was discharged in November, 1953.

After pursuing training at a radio technical college, Dieter was able to join a small computer company in California. He joined the Digital Equipment Company, Maynard, Mass., in 1967 and moved to Bedford in the fall of 1977. He retired from DEC in 1992.

An active Mason since 1966, Dieter has developed a philosophy of service: "Those who can do, should do."

When his son David started in Boy Scouts 43 years ago, Dieter became active in a Massachusetts troop.

In September 1977, Dieter, now a New Hampshire resident, started with Troop 414, which is chartered through the Bedford Presbyterian Church.

He was Scoutmaster in 1992. He is still active with camping and mentoring mostly Eagle Scouts as they learn to lead through the development of a service project.

He resides in the town with his wife Alberta.

The couple are the parents of Susan and David.

He is assistant moderator of state and town elections and a member of the Bedford Presbyterian Church.
