Wreath laid on Pierce grave in Concord

CONCORD — A wreath supplied by the White House was placed on the grave of President Franklin Pierce in Old North Cemetery last Tuesday.

Every year on the anniversary of Pierce's birthday (Nov.23, 1804), the White House sends a wreath to be placed on his gravesite.

Because the date sometimes coincides with the Thanksgiving holiday, the ceremony has traditional been held on the Tuesday before the holiday.

The commander of New Hampshire's military forces, Major-General William Reddel III, with several members of the New Hampshire Army National Guard, and sometimes NH Air Guard, placed the wreath.

The New Hampshire Governor's Horse Guards provide a color guard and fire three volleys over the President's grave, using Civil War Sharp's carbines. At this ceremony, the GHG members wear their Civil War uniforms honoring Franklin Pierce's honorary colonelship of the GHG during the war.

The Governor's Horse Guards was reconstituted in 2000 by order of then-Gov. Jeanne Shaheen and has participated in this ceremony since.
