Gilford seeks residents for chief search

GILFORD — The selectman have begun the search for a new police chief.

On Tuesday, Town Administrator Scott Dunn issued a statement saying the board is accepting letters of interest from residents who want to be part of a police chief search committee.

Since Aug. 28, Lt. James Leach has been acting police chief, replacing former Chief Kevin Keenan.

Keenan resigned on Nov. 20 following a town investigation into an affair he admitted to having with one of his female officers.

Dunn said the town is not yet accepting applications for candidates for the position.

The search committee will be tasked with reviewing applications, selecting candidates for interviews, conducting interviews and making recommendations for finalists, he said.

The committee will begin the process of accepting applications in January, Dunn said.

Most of the committee meetings and actions will take place in a non-public and confidential format, pursuant to RSA 91-A:3, Dunn said.

“The selectmen respectfully request that members of the panel conduct themselves with the utmost of professional decorum,” he said.

Those interested in being on the committee should apply no later than 5 p.m. on Dec. 13 by writing to selectmen@gilfordnh.org.

When asked what qualities he would like to see in the new police chief, Dunn said, “someone who will stay here for a while.”
