ROCHESTER — Police arrested two men in separate accidents Wednesday night involving driving while intoxicated.

The first, at 6:39 p.m., closed Salmon Falls Road. Police, firefighters and emergency personnel responded after a northbound 2007 Jeep Wrangler driven by Richard Wilkins, 49, of 68 Brooks Road, Barrington, left the road and struck a utility pole. The pole, near Tara Estates along Salmon Falls Road, snapped in half.

Wilkins suffered minor injuries during the crash, which caused the airbags to deploy, and caused a fire to begin in the Jeep. The crash closed the road for about an hour until firefighters extinguished the blaze, police said.

Salmon Falls Road will be closed from Tara Estates to Whitehall Road until utility crews can replace the broken pole.

Wilkins, who was later charged with driving while intoxicated, was released on $1,500 personal recognizance pending an arraignment, scheduled for Dec. 9.

Police said at 10:43 p.m., a 2004 Mazda 3 driven by David Blaney, 26, of 3D Academy St., Dover, was traveling east on Columbus Avenue when he failed to negotiate the corner at Winter Street and left the roadway, striking a telephone pole. Blaney was not injured, police said.

Winter Street stayed open to traffic during the investigation.

Blaney was arrested for aggravated driving while intoxicated. He was bailed on $2,500 personal recognizance and a court date of Dec. 9 was set.
