Tree worker killed in Laconia identified as Tilton man, 54
LACONIA — The tree worker killed in Laconia Sunday when a tall pine snapped in high winds and landed on him was identified Wednesday as Paul D. Russell of Tilton.
Russell, 54, was working for South Down Shores on Lake Winnipesaukee, a gated community along the lake, when the fatal accident occurred at 4:13 p.m., Laconia Police Lt. Rich Simmons said.
Russell was cutting a tree that had fallen across the road when a pine directly behind him snapped, Simmons said.
Rescue crews cut away limbs and branches, but Russell was dead by time they could reach him, Fire Lt. Chad Vaillancourt said.
High winds hit the state hard Sunday, downing tree limbs, knocking out power and toppling a Comcast fiberoptic cable across all lanes of Interstate 93.
