Barrington man charged with DWI in Rochester

ROCHESTER — A Barrington man was charged Wednesday with driving while intoxicated after allegedly driving his Jeep into a pole, police said.

Richard Wilkins, 49, was heading north on Salmon Falls Road shortly after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday when he drove off the road and into the pole, snapping it in half. His Jeep caught fire, though Wilkins was able to escape the crash with minor injuries, police said.

Salmon Falls Road was expected to be closed overnight Wednesday while crews repair the pole, police said.

Wilkins is scheduled to appear Dec. 9 in Rochester District Court.
