Claremont bank robbed at gunpoint

CLAREMONT - The Maple Avenue branch of the Claremont Savings Bank was robbed at gunpoint Tuesday morning.Claremont Police Chief Alexander Scott said the robber brandished a black semi-automatic pistol around 10:40 a.m.Police described the robber as a white male wearing a black winter ski hat/mask with two eye holes and a mouth hole, khaki cargo pants with flaps on the pockets, black sneakers with red highlights, a beige-colored canvas-type coat (Carhartt or barn-type coat) with a single pocket over the left on the chest area and a gold ring on his left ring finger.“He left the bank with an undisclosed amount of money and ran to the parking area of Moody Park where it is believed he got into a vehicle and fled the area heading toward the Claremont Junction,” police said in a press release.Shortly after the robbery, police received a motor vehicle complaint from a caller who reported a vehicle passed on the double yellow line at a very high rate of speed in the school zone on Maple Avenue heading toward Claremont Junction. The vehicle was described as a “smaller four-door SUV with no roof rack, dull silver or dull grey in color.”Police are asking anyone with information to call police.“Based on the description provided, if they think they might have information they are certainly encouraged to call the Claremont Police Department at 542-9538,” Scott said.Scott said investigators plan to work with Lebanon police to see if there is a connection between the robbery and the Nov. 20 armed robbery of the Lake Sunapee Bank on Hanover Street in Lebanon.Claremont police have already been in contact with Lebanon police to compare their notes on the Lebanon robbery with the Oct. 11 robbery of the One Credit Union in Claremont, he said.“We do not believe at this point in time that those are related, but we do not rule it out,” Scott said. The rash of Upper Valley bank robberies are “consist with what you are seeing across the state,” he said. “Certainly watching Channel 9 news and reading the Union Leader would make me think there is an increase in the state, certainly in Manchester.”New Hampshire State Police, Troop C and members of the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene to assist Claremont police.
