UNH Wildcat gridders up to 15th in polls

The University of New Hampshire football team earned some respect after its playoff-clinching 24-3 win over rival Maine Saturday at Cowell Stadium in Durham.

The Wildcats jumped to 15th in both FCS national polls. In the Sports Network FCS Top 25, released Sunday, the pollsters raised the Wildcats six spots. On Monday, the voters in the FCS Coaches Poll boosted UNH nine spots, up from 24th.

UNH, 7-4 overall, has been ranked in the top 25 by the Sports Network poll for 139 consecutive weeks, which is the longest streak in the nation. The Wildcats will host Lafayette in an NCAA first-round game on Saturday at noon. The winner plays at Maine on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m.

The Wildcats, who were 6-2 this season in the Colonial Athletic Association, have qualified for the NCAA postseason 10 straight seasons.

On Monday, Casey DeAndrade, a redshirt freshman defensive back, was honored as CAA football rookie of the week. DeAndrade recorded a career-high seven tackles (six solo, one assisted), one interception and a pass breakup to increase his CAA-leading total to 17, which ranks fourth in the nation.

In 10 games this season, DeAndrade has 51 tackles with two interceptions in addition to 17 pass breakups.

Hockey

In men’s ice hockey, UNH remained at No. 20 in Monday’s USCHO.com national poll. The Wildcats were not ranked in the USA Today/USA Hockey poll.

UNH is 5-3 in Hockey East, 7-6-1 overall after a weekend split at Providence College. The Friars won Saturday night’s contest, 4-2, behind a great goaltending performance by Jon Gillies. UNH worked overtime to win Friday’s game, 3-2, on a Matt Willows goal.

The Friars (10-2-1) remained Hockey East’s top-ranked team in both polls, taking fourth in both.

UNH plays a midweek non-league home game tonight at 7 against Harvard. The game will be televised on WBIN. The Wildcats close out November with two road games against Colorado College Friday (9:37 p.m.) and Saturday (9:07 p.m.).
