NASHUA— Police say an arrest is expected after a handgun accidentally discharged this past weekend at a city apartment, sending two people to the hospital.
The person responsible for the shooting will be arrested and charged with reckless conduct, according to Lt. Denis Linehan, who withheld identifying the two individuals involved until the arrest takes place.
"Alcohol appears to be a factor in this incident," said Linehan.
Authorities were called to Canterbury Apartments at 39 Congress St., apt. 24, for two reported gunshot wounds about 10:30 p.m. Saturday. A female occupant of the apartment was shot in the leg, and her male friend was shot in the hand, according to Linehan.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the man, from New York, was taking apart a 40-caliber handgun to show the woman, who was interested in possibly purchasing a gun of her own, said Linehan.
"He did not realize it was still loaded," Linehan said, explaining a single bullet penetrated through the man's hand and then entered the woman's upper leg.
Although the shooting was accidental, Linehan said the shooter will be charged with one count of reckless conduct.
Individuals should not be handling firearms while drinking alcohol, warned Linehan, adding a gun should always be treated as if it is loaded. Weapons should be checked and triple checked to ensure they are safe before a gun is broken down, he added.
Both injuries are non-life threatening. The woman was taken to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center where surgery was conducted. She was still a patient there Monday.
The shooter was also treated at a local hospital and was still there Monday. A warrant was out for his arrest Monday, said Linehan, who anticipates an arrest within one or two days.
There were other people present at the time of the shooting, but no other injuries were reported, according to police.
