Pedestrian struck by car in Newport hospitalized

NEWPORT — A pedestrian was hospitalized Sunday evening after being hit by a vehicle in the routes 103 and 11 and Route 10 intersection.

Candace Murphy, 21, of Newport was taken to Valley Regional Hospital in Claremont with what appeared to be non-serious injuries, Newport police Cpl. Charles McLeman said Sunday night.

Police responded to the scene around 5:08 p.m. Sunday evening.

Murphy was running across the intersection heading south on Elm Street at the intersection of South Main Street when she was struck by a four-door Kia, driven by Kim Baligad, 53, of Newport, which was passing through a green light in the interaction heading east from Elm Street to Maple Street, McLeman said.
“She was struck in the intersection. It was a low impact collision,” McLeman said.

It appears Murphy didn’t sustain serious injury and the Kia had minor front end damage, he said.

Police are still interviewing witnesses and investigating the accident. It appears that speed and alcohol were not a factor, McLennan said.
