Blues tip Bruins in shootout

BOSTON (Sports Direct) — Derek Roy scored in the first period before netting the shootout’s decisive goal in the fourth round as St. Louis maintained its dominance in Boston, defeating the Bruins, 3-2.

After hitting the crossbar early in overtime, Roy slowly skated in and beat Tuukka Rask inside the left post to end the contest. Rask, who finished with 24 saves, slammed his stick against the post in disgust after the tally.

Captain David Backes also scored in regulation and Jaroslav Halak finished with 29 saves while stopping three of four shooters in the bonus format. Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk notched his 100th career assist for the Blues, who improved to 7-1-1 in their last nine games overall and haven’t exited Boston with a loss since Jan. 30, 2001.

Fourth-liner Gregory Campbell scored his first goal of the season and Carl Soderberg also tallied for the Bruins, who saw their four-game home winning streak come to an end.

The teams traded tallies in short order as Campbell opened the scoring with 1:40 remaining in the first period after converting defenseman Torey Krug’s cross-ice centering feed before Roy answered 31 seconds later with a soft wrist shot from the point. Backes deflected Shattenkirk’s shot from the point to give St. Louis a 2-1 lead with 3:56 left in the second before Soderberg countered with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle just over 2 1/2 minutes later.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Legendary D Bobby Orr participated in the ceremonial puck drop prior to the game. The Hall-of-Famer scored the iconic Stanley Cup-clinching goal for the Bruins in Game 4 of the 1970 series versus the Blues. ... St. Louis LW Alex Steen, who is tied for the league lead with 17 goals, did not record an official shot on goal. ... With his parents in attendance, Boston D Kevan Miller made his NHL debut after being recalled from Providence of the American Hockey League on an emergency basis.
