Rindge woman plans to plead guilty to Jaffrey crash that killed boyfriend

KEENE — A woman accused of driving drunk in a Jaffrey crash that killed her boyfriend intends to plead guilty in Cheshire County Superior Court to negligent homicide.

Nichole L. Oates, 35, was a Rindge resident at the time of the crash, but now resides in Troy.

In February, she was indicted on six charges — three felony counts of negligent homicide, two felony counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated and one count of reckless conduct with a deadly weapon.

The multiple charges allege Oates caused the death of her boyfriend, Daniel Peard, 34, of Jaffrey, on Jan. 5 by driving while intoxicated with an alcohol concentration of 0.08, speeding and “drifting” her 2012 Ford F-150 Raptor pickup truck in snow along Fitzwilliam Road in Jaffrey.

According to court documents, the Ford veered off the road and into an embankment, where it struck a boulder, which caused it to spin out of control and hit a tree.

Oates has filed an intent to enter a plea of guilty on a charge of negligent homicide that would include a jail sentence of four to eight years and the indefinite loss of her driver’s license.

Earlier this month, Cheshire County Superior Court Judge John C. Kissinger Jr. granted her request for a Jan. 6 plea hearing and sentencing date, which would allow her time to arrange for the care of her three young children.

“She understands that she will be facing some period of incarceration as a result of her plea,” her attorney wrote in the request.
