Police chase ends in arrest

CHRISTY FERNANDEZ

AMHERST — A Nashua woman has been arrested after leading police on a car chase through three communities and allegedly causing several collisions, including a crash with a police cruiser.

Cristy Fernandez, 34, of Nashua has been charged with theft, operating as a habitual offender and disobeying a police officer for the Wednesday morning incident. Authorities say she could face additional charges.

Around 9:30 a.m., police responded to Walmart for a reported shoplifter who was fleeing in a Volvo sedan. The driver allegedly refused to stop for police and instead continued traveling through Amherst and Merrimack and eventually into Nashua, said Amherst Police Chief Mark Reams.

In the process, Reams said several motor vehicle collisions occurred, although he was unsure of the exact number of accidents or the rate of speed the vehicle was traveling.

He said she caused minor damage to a police vehicle when she clipped the front end.

Fernandez was eventually arrested in the area of Chandler Street in Nashua when she jumped from her moving vehicle, according to Reams. She suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated and released from Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, he said. No one else was injured.

Fernandez was released on bail and will be arraigned on Dec. 12.Additional charges could be possible from other departments, including Merrimack, said authorities.Reams said he did not know what Fernandez allegedly stole from the store.khoughton@newstote.com
