St. Anselm, Penmen resume hoops battles


In an early-season test for both teams, Division II basketball rivals St. Anselm College and Southern New Hampshire University collide tonight at 7:30 in a Northeast-10 battle at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The women's game, pitting the 3-1 Hawks against the 2-1 Penmen, will start at 5:30 p.m.

The SNHU men's team is off to a 2-1 start this season. The Penmen opened the season with an 89-72 home win against Post University. Elijah Bonsignore led SNHU with 23 points and 10 rebounds and Aleksandar Dobrovic amassed 21 points and eight rebounds.

The Penmen lost their NE-10 opener to Merrimack College 75-71 in North Andover, Mass., getting 18 points from Bonsignore. The team rebounded last Saturday with a 62-53 home win against Holy Family University.

St. Anselm (1-2) opened its season with a 102-96 home loss to Bentley University, getting 25 points from sophomore Mike McCahey. The Hawks notched their first win in Albany, N.Y., in the NE-10 Challenge, beating Chestnut Hill 113-73 behind 28 points from junior Roy Mabrey and a career-high 25 markers from senior John Nielsen.

Ranked 16th at the time in the National Association of Basketball Coaches poll, St. Anselm dropped an 82-79 decision to Felician College in the second game of the NE-10 Challenge.

In the women's game, St. Anselm will be led tonight by senior forwards Briana Jones (16.8 ppg), Tori Lehr (14.5 ppg) and senior guard Meg Morrissey, averaging 11.5 points per game.

SNHU is led by a trio of New Hampshire products. Former Manchester Memorial standout Amra Elezovic, who transferred from UMass-Lowell, leads the Penmen with 18 points per game. Junior guard Brooke Springfield, of Jaffrey, paces the team with 4.7 assists and Kelly Chergey, of Bow, has averaged four rebounds a game.

In the latest poll released by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the Franklin Pierce men's team is ranked 23rd overall after a 5-0 start.
