PELHAM - A driver-less 10-wheel dump truck rolled across Debbie Road shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday night and plunged into a pond, requiring the services of police, fire crews, environmental experts and a big tow truck.
The owner of the truck, identified by police as Michael Berton, had parked the dump truck in his driveway. But the brakes slipped and the 2001 LT9500 truck had rolled across the street and into a pond in the yard of his neighbor across the street.
Nobody was injured, but the state Department of Environmental Services and a hazmat team were summoned to check for environmental damage to the pond. No leaking fluids were discovered, and a crew from Woody's Towing set to work removing the big truck from its frigid bath.
State police said a number of problems were found with the braking system, and Berton was told not to drive the truck until he gets it fixed. No charges were filed and there were no injuries.
