PLAISTOW — Police are investigating after a family’s dog was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon.
According to police, officers were called to Westville Road around 1 p.m. Tuesday to investigate a report that an 8-year-old female German shepherd mix named Jaycee had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to her hind quarter.
Police said they don’t believe the shooting was related to legal hunting activity.
Jaycee’s owners told police she would walk behind their business near the railroad tracks, which are within about 20 feet off their property, but didn’t wander far, police said.
Police said Jaycee had been outside but had not returned. Concerned, her owners looked for her and discovered her body next to the railroad tracks on the other side of her owner’s business. She was gone for less than a half-hour.
Police said it appears she almost made it back home when she died near the state’s park and ride lot and Joanne Drive.
Police searched the area for evidence and witnesses.
People at other businesses also told police that Jaycee didn’t wander around and “was sweet to those she encountered,” police said.
Police reported no complaints about the dog in the past.
