MOULTONBOROUGH — The new property tax rate has been set at $8.69 per thousand dollars of valuation.
According to an announcement from the town administrator's office, tax bills should be mailed to taxpayers by the end of this month, with payment due by Dec. 30.
The new rate is an increase of 1.51 percent, or 13 cents, from the current rate of $8.56 per thousand with the town's overall values dropping roughly 2 percent over the previous year. The resulting tax bills will result in roughly 52 percent of the taxpayers having an overall bill lower than last year while roughly 48 percent of the taxpayers will see an increase.
The Town's Tax Collector reminds taxpayers that to deduct real estate taxes from their 2013 federal income tax, the payment needs to be postmarked no later than Dec. 31. Payments by check placed into the drop box at the entry door to Town Hall on that day will also be eligible for the deduction.
At its Nov. 7 meeting, the Board of Selectmen applied roughly $540,000 of the town's fund balance to lower the overall impact of the increase. The new rate, with a minor variance for rounding, breaks down as $2.66 for the state education tax, which is up about 14 cents, $2.13 per thousand for local schools, which is down about 7 cents, $1.13 for the county tax, which is up about 2 cents, and $2.77 for the town tax. The town tax rate has gone up about 4 cents or about the same amount it had gone down the previous year.
"It is never well-received when the tax rate needs to go up, but I am pleased that the Board of Selectmen was able to keep the overall rate to a point where the majority of our taxpayers will see an actual decrease in their bill, " said Joel Mudgett, chairman of the selectmen.
The tax bill mailing will also include the semi-annual newsletter with stories on the recent addition to the noise ordinance and a recap of the successful first year of the community garden program.
