Monarchs skate past Norfolk

It was a evening of festivities Saturday at Verizon Wireless Arena, where a shaggy-headed crowd celebrated "Mullets in Movember" Night and Monarchs coach Mark Morris was honored for having earned his 300th career win (last Wednesday) in the pros following 300 at the college level.

The party then spilled onto the ice, as Manchester rode two first-period goals to a 3-2 victory over Norfolk, allowing the Monarchs (11-3-1-2) to salvage the weekend after having fallen to Portland on Friday and earn their 25th point, best in the Eastern Conference.

Brandon Kozun put Manchester on the board just 1:15 into the game on assists from Nick Deslauriers and Derek Forbort, and Deslauriers scored one of his own (from Jordan Weal and Andy Andreoff) 12 minutes later for a 2-0 lead.

Chris Wagner got a goal back for Norfolk in the second period to pull within one.

Kozun (from Weal and Andrew Campbell) provided some breathing room for the Monarchs with his second of the game in the third period, and it proved necessary when Antoine Laganiere scored the last goal of the game for the Admirals 8:23 into the third.

Jean-Francois Berube earned the victory in the Monarchs goal with 28 saves.

The Monarchs are off until Friday, when the host Worcester at 7 p.m.
