SALEM — A Massachusetts man wanted for the kidnapping and brutal beating of a woman at a Salem motel has been arrested in the Bronx.
Walton Valentin, 30, of 41 Hardy St. in Methuen was arrested on Thursday afternoon by members of the Massachusetts State Police’s violent fugitive apprehension squad along with members of the New York City Police Department.
Valentin was found hiding in the bathroom of a deli on Anderson Avenue in the Bronx, according to Massachusetts State Police officials.
New Hampshire and Massachusetts police have been conducting a manhunt for Valentin since Saturday, Nov. 9, when he allegedly kidnapped his girlfriend in Lawrence, Mass., stealing her car and taking her to the Park View Inn in Salem.
At the Park View Inn, Valentin allegedly tried to shoot her but when the gun jammed he viciously beat her with the gun, according to Salem Deputy Police Chief Shawn Patten.
“The victim stated that the incident started in Lawrence when the male suspect jumped into her car and held a gun to her stomach,” said Patten. Valentin allegedly began threatening to kill the victim’s family in the Dominican Republic.
Valentin then allegedly choked the woman and hit her over the head repeatedly with the gun after the gun misfired. After regaining consciousness, she called the police and was transported by the Salem Fire Department to Parkland Medical Center for treatment.
The incident touched off a manhunt by Salem police as well as Andover and Methuen, Mass., police and the Massachusetts State Police.
Following Valentin’s arrest on Thursday afternoon, he was transported to a police station in the Bronx for booking.
He will face charges in New Hampshire for the Nov. 9 incident, including multiple counts of assault and battery, assault with a dangerous weapon, unlawful carrying of a firearm, violation of a protective order, threats to commit a crime and home invasion.
During the investigation, it was also revealed that Valentin may have committed additional crimes against the woman in Massachusetts in October and could face additional charges there.
