Morris goes for historic win today

What's 300 plus 300?

It's unique in the annals of hockey coaching, that's what it is.

On Education Day, appropriately, Manchester Monarchs head coach Mark Morris has a chance to turn some math into history. With a victory this morning against the Norfolk Admirals (10 a.m. at Verizon Wireless Arena), Morris can become the first hockey coach to earn 300 professional and 300 college wins. Morris is currently on 299 wins (and 207 losses) in his eighth season in Manchester. Before arriving in New Hampshire, he amassed 306 wins with Clarkson University, from 1988 to 2002. During those 14 years, he had 10 seasons of 20 or more victories.

The Monarchs (9-2-1-2), who split in Newfoundland last weekend with St. John's, are leading the AHL's Eastern Conference in points (21) and are second only to Abbotsford (23) in the entire 30-team league.

The Admirals, the AHL affilate of the Anaheim Ducks, are 7-4-0-3, for 17 points. On Tuesday, the Ducks assigned two players, left wing Matt Beleskey and goalie Viktor Fasth, to the Admirals on a long-term injury conditioning loan.

Today's game marks the first of three for Manchester over a four-day span. On Friday, the Monarchs plays Portland in Lewiston, Maine, and on Saturday, they host Norfolk again, this time at 7 p.m.
