DERRY - Pinkerton Academy administrators considered holding graduation on campus in June but have decided to hold the ceremony in Manchester because of safety and other concerns.
The 2014 graduation has been set for Monday, June 16, at 4 p.m., at the Verizon Wireless Arena, Headmaster Mary Anderson announced.
Pinkerton wanted to provide early notice so families can make plans. More details will be announced at a later date, Anderson wrote in a recent letter to parents.
"In a few months, seniors will end one chapter of their life and start the next," Anderson wrote. "Parents, you have worked hard to get your children to this stage in life, and you can be very proud of your child's accomplishments."
The school will celebrate its 200th anniversary beginning in January and had hoped to schedule the graduation on campus, Anderson wrote. But those plans were changed after administrators did some research and determined there are obstacles that are too great to overcome."Attendance for recent years has been around 5,000 people, presenting logistics of safety, security, accessibility and parking," Anderson wrote. "Adverse weather is also a major concern."
This will be the third year graduation has been held at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The last time graduation was held on campus was 2010, said Anne Parker, the school's director of alumni relations.
Anderson said that in past years she has hesitated to set the graduation date because administrators can never safely estimate the number of snow days, but a new blizzard bag program has helped her feel more confident this year.
