Concord firefighters bring fire in building under control

CONCORD — Firefighters quickly doused a small fire Tuesday on the roof of Concord Steam Corp., which burns wood chips and other biomass to produce steam that is used to heat two hospitals and other buildings in the Pleasant Street area.

No one was hurt and fire damage to the 123 Pleasant St. building was minimal, Concord Fire Department Battalion Chief Rick Whitney said.

The plant continued operating throughout the incident, he added.

A plant operator called in the fire about 12:45 p.m. It was under control within a half-hour.

The fire started from overheating during the conveying process. It is being investigated by the state Fire Marshal's Office because the building is on state land.

The plant is located on the grounds of the state-owned New Hampshire Hospital. It provides heat to the hospital, Concord Hospital and other buildings on Pleasant Street and the downtown area.
