KEENE — City planners have launched a public comment period for those who live, work or recreate near Marlboro Street and Keene’s southeast neighborhoods.

Plans to make the area more appealing to pedestrians and cyclists, reduce flooding, stabilize the single-family neighborhoods while at the same time attract mixed-use development to the area began in January.

More than 50 people attended a public hearing Tuesday at which drafts of zoning regulation changes and development guidelines to advance the community’s vision for the area were presented. The public comment period in which one aspect of the proposed plan is highlighted each week for the next four weeks started on Friday.

City Hall, 3 Washington St., and the Monadnock Food Co-op, 34 Cypress St., are serving as information centers and drop-off stations for comments, with postcards provided for written comments.

“This week’s topic is the storm water recommendations and flood water recommendations,” said Michele Chalice, city planner.

The topic ends Thursday.

From Friday to Nov. 21, the topic of the comment period will be zoning and regulatory change. From Nov. 22 to Nov. 28, the topic will be the Marlboro Street Corridor with regards to the roadway, parking, walking and bike riding.

During the last week of the public comment period, from Nov. 29 to Dec. 6, the topic will turn to design.

The comment stations include an exhibit that shows a summary of the analysis as well as the recommendations for each aspect of the proposed plans.

The zoning initiative is expected to be complete early next year.

“We’re really looking forward to folks coming down and being part of the input,” Chalice said.
