Roy's Variety

Roy family of Merrimack to remember their store

MERRIMACK — Remember Roy's Variety?

The famous sign atop the structure became a landmark known far and wide for its clever enticement to "Eat Here And Get Gas."

Members of the large extended Merrimack family of Roger Roy, a co-owner who died last year, will talk about the famous business and growing up in Merrimack.

Denise Roy, a detective lieutenant with the Merrimack Police Department, along with her sisters, Louise Roy and Darlene Sullivan and several other family members, will share their memories in a 15-minute video slideshow on Nov. 18.

They plan some fun anecdotes about their past, and will take questions from the audience at the John O'Leary Adult Community Center, Inc.

In today's world, where families are much smaller and life much different from the good old days, this presentation will take us back to another era where hard work, cooperation by all and good old fashioned family values were the norm.

The John O'Leary Adult Community Center, Inc., in conjunction with the Merrimack Historical Society and the Merrimack Senior Citizens Club, will host the retrospective of a time gone by.

The store is currently the site of Pennichuck Square on Route 101-A and Naticook Road in Merrimack.

The presentation will start at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.

Admission is free, and guests are invited to bring along interested children who will learn a great deal about what life was like along a sleepy Amherst Street back in the day.

The John O'Leary Adult Community Center, Inc. is a multi-use facility and home to the Merrimack Senior Citizens Club, St. Joseph Community Services Meals-on-Wheels program, and the Rotary Club of Merrimack, among others.

The center is located at 4 Church St., Merrimack, at the top of a hill behind the Merrimack Public Library, and next to the First Congregational Church of Merrimack.

For further information, please call Steve Dembow, center coordinator at 429-0902.
