Sunday morning fire destroys Madbury home

MADBURY — A fire that reached the “equivalent” of four-alarm status destroyed an old colonial-style home Sunday morning on Cherry Street.

The fire, at 65 Cherry Lane, was reported to Madbury Fire Department at 9:07 a.m. and the first volunteer firefighters on the scene reported the structure fully involved in flames.

A second alarm was ordered within minutes and a third alarm brought engine companies and tanker trucks to the scene from nearby communities. The fire was under control at three alarms, but Assistant Fire Chief Jim Davis said a fourth alarm was struck to bring additional water to the site.

Davis reported that the occupant of the building was evacuated safely, though the flames gutted much of the home. Crews and emergency personnel from Madbury, Durham, Newmarket, Dover, Lee, Rochester, Epping, York, Newington and Barrington were on the scene.

At one point firefighters were forced to evacuate the structure due to safety concerns, but were able to get back inside later Sunday afternoon. There was no reports of injuries at the scene.

Davis reported the fire was under control around 11 a.m., with crews working on a few remaining hot spots through the day. An inspector from the State Fire Marshall’s office was called to the site Sunday afternoon. The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time.

A section of Cherry Lane was shut down to vehicular traffic while crews battled the flames.
