MANCHESTER - The Bedford girls stunned the high school soccer world Saturday night, defeating nationally top-ranked Exeter, 1-0, to claim the NHIAA Division I girls' soccer tournament championship.

Exeter had won four consecutive championships and 42 straight games before the Bulldogs ruined their party Saturday night.

Bedford (13-2-2), ranked third in Division I, had lost to the Blue Hawks, 3-0, during the regular season, but turned that result around on the pitch at Southern New Hampshire University.

Asha Steele scored the only goal of the game at the 22:36 mark of the second half, assisted by Regan Schiappa. Schiappa crossed a pass in the center of the field to Steele, who kicked the winner past the Exeter goalie.

Bedford was outshot by Exeter, 18-5, but Bulldog goalie Brooke Barrett registered the shutout.
