Tough night up north for Monarchs

Eric O’Dell scored a goal and two assists to help the St. John’s IceCaps past the Manchester Monarchs, 5-2, Friday night at Mile One Centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Manchester (8-2-1-2) leads the Atlantic Division with 19 points. St. John’s (6-6-1-0) is second in the Atlantic Division with 13 points.

Nick Deslauriers and Jordan Weal scored for Manchester. The two teams play again tonight at 6 p.m.

Jason Jaffray and John Albert, with an assist from O’Dell, scored first period goals to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.

Right wing Blair Riley picked up his first tally of the season at 7:42 of the second period to push the advantage to 3-0 after two.

Deslauriers scored early in the third to give the Monarchs some life, but St. John’s left wing Kael Mouillierat scored at the midway point of the final period to re-establish the three-goal lead. O’Dell’s goal five minutes later put the result beyind doubt.

Martin Jones (8-2-2) took his second loss of the season, stopping 27 out of 32 shots for Manchester. St. John’s goalie Eddie Pasquale (6-5-0) earned his sixth win of the season making 28 saves on 30 shots.

Manchester was 1-for-8 on the power play. St. John’s went 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
