Manchester roads swirl with activity this weekend

MANCHESTER — The city is advising drivers of holiday weekend traffic restrictions downtown to clear the way for a charity road race on Sunday and Veterans Day parade on Monday.

The third annual “Hallo-Wiener Hustle” takes place Sunday morning on a course running along Elm and Chestnut streets, where traffic will be restricted and runners will have the right-of-way in the right lanes.

The event is a four-person relay that involves more than just running. Each participant runs the 1.25-mile course, then must eat a hot dog and drink a beer before the relay is officially complete and the next runner can start. Runners have the option of non-alcoholic beer as well as gluten-free and veggie dogs.

McGarvey’s at 1097 Elm St. is the sponsor of the event, which raises money for New Horizons food pantries and shelters. The registration fee was $80 and all 50 team spots were filled by Friday.

The race starts at 10 a.m. at the tavern near Elm and Lowell streets and goes north to Brook Street. Runners turn east on Brook, then south on Chestnut Street. The race veers east at Lowell back to Elm and the finish. Police say portions of Brook, Bridge and Lowell will be closed between Elm and Chestnut during the race.

Elm Street will close again on Monday morning for the Veterans Day Parade, which starts at 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of Elm and Webster streets, continuing south on Elm to Veterans Park. A bugler from West High School is scheduled to play taps in front of City Hall at 11 a.m.
