SALEM — U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-NH, visited local medical device company Gamma Medica on Friday morning and thanked employees for their efforts in developing technology that helps with the early detection of breast cancer.

“It’s terrific to see the technology you are working on and what can happen when you can detect breast cancer in a way that is more precise,” Ayotte said.Gamma Medica recently opened its new headquarters in Salem and has 26 employees, according to president and CEO Jim Calandra. The company specializes in advanced digital molecular imaging technology, and its molecular breast imaging technology allows for the early detection of breast cancer.

About 40 percent of women have dense breast tissue that makes it difficult for present mammography technology to detect breast cancer, Calandra said. The technology designed by Gamma Medica makes it easier for breast radiologists to diagnose difficult cases, especially for women with dense breast tissue.

Ayotte said she will be taking a pledge to help end breast cancer by 2020, adding that companies like Gamma Medica will help make that goal a reality.

“I feel the good work you are doing here is part of that,” said Ayotte as she toured the company.

Ayotte said she will be working with the company to help it deal with FDA issues and the medical device tax.

The senator said she was happy to see the company locate in New Hampshire, and said she hopes it continues to grow and bring more qualified workers to the state.

Calandra said several employees have either moved to or are planning to move to New Hampshire as a result of it making its headquarters in Salem.

“I hope I can come back again and see more people who were born in New Hampshire or have moved to New Hampshire working here,” Ayotte said. “It’s exciting to have new companies here.”
