Souhegan, Pembroke win Division II girls' soccer semifinals

EXETER — It took six rounds of penalty kicks before No. 3 Souhegan defeated No. 7 Hanover, 3-2, in the Division II girls’ soccer tournament semifinals on Wednesday.

The Sabers will face No. 9 Pembroke, a 1-0 winner over No. 5 Coe-Brown in the other semifinal, in Saturday’s 4 p.m. final at Southern New Hampshire University.

It’s Souhegan’s third straight trip to the final. The Sabers won the 2011 title.Souhegan’s Peyton Kent’s corner kick bent in and found the net to put the Sabers up 1-0 at the half.

In the 43rd minute Kent she put another corner kick on goal. This time it struck Hanover defender Emily Acker and bounced into the net to make it 2-0.

In the 57th minute, Hanover’s Sarah Wagner scored off a Abby Smith corner kick to close to 2-1.

Then with just 12:19 remaining in regulation, Emily Malenka fed a pass to Susanna Penfield, who blasted it past Souhegan goalie Mikaela Sullivan to tie the game.

Each team missed three penalty kicks in the best-of-five round so they advanced to sudden death.

Hanover’s Rachel Bogosian shot first and was stopped by Sullivan. That set the table for Rachel Facey, who beat goalie Ashley Levesque to win it.Pembroke 1, Coe-Brown 0: The run of upsets continues for Pembroke Academy.

The Spartans upset Coe-Brown, 1-0, Wednesday to book their spot in the final.

Brianna Douglas scored the lone goal for the Spartans in the 43rd minute.

Pembroke beat top seed Portsmouth and No. 8 8 Merrimack Valley to reach the semifinals.
