UNH-Manchester dean abruptly resigns his post

MANCHESTER — The dean of the University of New Hampshire-Manchester abruptly resigned his post effective Friday, less than 1½ years on the job, the university announced to faculty and staff at the Manchester campus on Friday.

In an email, the university said Ali Rafieymehr was resigning his $204,000 post “to pursue other opportunities.” The email said Associate Dean Dan Reagan will serve as interim dean while UNH undergoes a national search for a new dean. The dean is the top academic and administrative officer of the campus, which had a fall enrollment of 1,233 students.

Shortly before he started his job on July 1, 2012, UNH touted Rafieymehr and his entrepreneurial and academic credentials. He was expected to continue the millyard campus’ efforts around work force needs and economic development.

And he was to partner with businesses and organizations in the Merrimack Valley.

In an email statement, university Provost Lisa MacFarlane said Rafieymehr played an important role in addressing the state’s needs for graduates in programs of science, technology, engineering and math.

She noted the opening of the STEM Discovery Lab, which provides STEM educational resources and classes for students and teachers in Manchester schools, and the opening of the Emerging Technology Center, where students work on real-world projects with faculty and businesses.

“We are grateful for his enthusiasm in building new opportunities in Manchester, and we are committed to continuing that work,” MacFarlane said in the statement.

Before taking the UNH-Manchester position, Rafieymehr was a software engineer for 20 years at Digital Equipment and most recently an administrator at Champlain College in Vermont. He also held teaching positions at Western New England University, St. Anselm College, University of Massachusetts-Lowell and Merrimack College.
