Hundreds attend funeral of Keene restaurant owner

KEENE — Hundreds attended a standing-room-only funeral service for Keon E. Ioannou at Saint George Greek Orthodox Hellenic Hall Tuesday morning.

The approximately 40-minute service included traditional chants and prayers in Greek.

Mourners still shocked by the sudden death of Ioannou in a hit-and-run accident Saturday said the service was “beautiful.”

“It was very nice. It was traditional. It was full. Standing room only,” said Jaime Tussing, who said he met Ioannou when he moved to Keene 12 years ago.

“He was fun. He was funny. He was always full of glee,” Tussing said.

Ioannou is also known to his friends for his generosity. When Tussing was in-between apartments, Ioannou opened his home up to him, he said.

Ioannou, 48, was a chef and owner of Tony Clamato’s Ristorante on Court Street. He was struck and killed riding his bicycle in a hit-and-run accident on Route 101 in the early morning hours Saturday after leaving the restaurant.

The woman accused of being the driver of the vehicle that struck him — 41-year-old Tracy Burroughs — was a waitress at Tony Clamato’s and lived in Ioannou’s Marlboro Road home.

Burroughs was arrested Saturday morning on felony charges of conduct after an accident — leaving the scene of a fatal accident — and negligent homicide. Police are still investigating whether to add a charge of driving while intoxicated.

She was arraigned in the 8th Circuit Court District Division Monday and held on $25,000 cash bail.

Tuesday, a district court clerk said the probable cause hearing is set to take place Thursday.
