NH’s hunting youngsters get their deerNovember 04. 2013 9:58PM
CONCORD — New Hampshire’s youngest hunters harvested more than 400 deer in this year’s youth hunt weekend, according to the state Fish and Game Department.
Fish and Game said the preliminary total of deer taken during Oct. 26-27 was 411, which is a 14 percent increase from 2012.
“Many of New Hampshire’s youth hunters were successful over the weekend in harvesting, what for many, was likely their first deer,” said Dan Bergeron, deer project leader for the New Hampshire Fish and Game department. “More importantly they were safely introduced to the sport by an experienced hunter and close friend and hopefully gained some memorable experiences.”
The total remains preliminary because all registrations have not yet been reported and verified.
The program allows youths to hunt during the specified weekend as long as they are accompanied by an adult mentor who holds a hunting license. The adults are not allowed to carry weapons during the youth hunt weekend.
The state has offered a special youth deer hunt since 1999.
