Overdue hunter, 68, found safe in Pittsburg

PITTSBURG — Fish and Game officers successfully located an overdue hunter in Pittsburg late Saturday night.

According to Region One Fish and Game Officer Christopher Egan, about 6 p.m. Saturday his department received a report of an overdue hunter in Pittsburg.
Norman Colburn, 68, of Laconia, was reportedly last seen by a hunting companion around 9:30 a.m., in a wooded area just off Sugar Camp Acres Road. The caller stated that Colburn had set out to hunt deer in the area of some beaver ponds between Sugar Camp Acres and Back Lake Road.
The caller said that poor weather conditions, combined with the fact that Colburn usually wrapped up hunting trips in the early afternoon, prompted the friend to call for help locating him after dark.

"The weather had taken a turn for the worse, and shortly after sunset, the soaking rain turned to wet snow, with an air temperature of 34 degrees and moderate winds," said Egan. "The threat of hypothermia was very likely in these conditions."

Conservation officers first used lights, sirens and air horns from the location Colburn was last seen, in an attempt to guide him out of the woods, while members of the Pittsburg Police Department and a U.S. Border Patrol agent searched perimeter roads.

Conservation officers used ATVs to access a gated road system behind the town transfer station, stopping periodically to attempt voice contact with Colburn. At approximately 10:25 p.m., officers heard Colburn respond to them calling his name. They followed a compass bearing towards Colburn's voice, and located him in some woods off the trail at 10:30 p.m., approximately 1 mile from where he was last seen.

"He was cold and wet and had some minor scratches on his face, but was otherwise unharmed." Egan said.

Colburn was brought to an ATV and transported out to Back Lake Road, where he declined medical treatment.
