Classy and sassy with a strong sense of street style is how student Alyssa Vautier described the local look that was showcased Friday night at a fashion show at Nashua Community College.

Sponsored by the Visual Arts Club, the show was an opportunity for students to promote styles and clothing from area shops and designers and give local businesses a boost before the busy holiday shopping season.

"We wanted to show the clothing that's available at local businesses and let people know they don't have to go to the malls and big box stores," said club president Cerridwen Alwyn, who added the show was one of the group's community service projects.

Alwyn enlisted a group of fellow students to model outfits and accessories by local businesses such as Mother and Child, Designer Consigner, Maaxeed, Rags by Rags and Jenny Jewelry.

The models showed off a wide variety of day and evening wear on a makeshift runway in a lecture hall.

The lineup of styles included beaded and metallic gowns, sequined shorts, sweaters, party dresses, leggings, and a wide selection of boots and formal and casual footwear.

Student Nick Frasca, who helped run the event, said that, for men, the Nashua look boiled down to jeans and a plaid shirt.

Vautier agreed those were essential wardrobe items for both men and women, but added that Nashua ramps up the look .

"You can add a little polish with some bright colors, a scarf and maybe some nice jewelry," she said.

Devon Jenny, student Master of Ceremonies, kept the show moving with high praise for the outfits and encouraging words for the first-time models.

The audience was especially impressed with a funky full-length white lace ruffled dressed topped by a blue knit bodice modeled by Kaitlin Girard.

"That's something you'll only see in 'Gone with the Wind,' " said Jenny. "And here, in Nashua."
