Monarchs subdue Bruins

The Manchester Monarchs added to their AHL-leading point total with a 5-2 win at Providence Friday night.

Manchester is 7-1-3 for 17 points. Providence fell to 4-3-2. The teams will meet again Saturday night at Verizon Wireless Arena at 7 p.m. for Canadian Heritage Night.

The Monarchs were without two of their top scoring threats as forwards Linden Vey and Tyler Toffoli were called up to the parent club Los Angeles Kings on Friday.

Their linemate, Tanner Pearson, didn't miss a beat, scoring a goal and adding two assists in the win. Jordan Weal scored a goal and added two assists as well.

Manchester took a 1-0 lead just 25 seconds into the game when Pearson's wrist shot from the right circle beat Niklas Svedberg on the power play.

Providence tied the game at 1-1 with its own power-play goal at 18:08. Alexander Khokhlachev notched his first goal, banging home a rebound chance past Martin Jones (32 saves).

The Monarchs reclaimed the lead at 2-1 with just 1.1 seconds remaining in the first when Weal scored his second of the season.

Manchester added two more goals in a fight-filled second period. Nick Shore scored his second goal of the year at 3:02 to make it 3-1 and Andy Andreoff tipped a Pearson shot home at 7:45 to chase Svedberg in favor of Malcolm Subban.

Monarchs captain Andrew Campbell fought Matt Fraser, Scott Sabourin traded fists with Bruin Mike Moore and finally, Andreoff and Kevan Miller dropped the gloves in the second.

Providence scored a power-play goal 32 seconds into the third period to cut the lead to 4-2. Matt Fraser scored the goal, his sixth.

That was as close as the Bruins would get, however. Manchester hung on and Brandon Kozun added an empty net goal with 1:02 remaining to close out the win.
