Marine Corps League to honor New Hampshire vets who served in Korea

The 15th annual Gathering of Marines will celebrate both the founding of the U.S. Marine Corps in 1775 and recognize all New Hampshire veterans who served during the Korean War.

The Lakes Region Detachment of the Marine Corps will host the annual Gathering of the Marines on Nov. 9 at the Margate Resort, 76 Lake St., Laconia. Opening ceremonies begin at 7 p.m. followed by a western-style buffet, reading of the Marine Corps Commandant's annual birthday message and traditional cake cutting.

This year, the Lakes Region Detachment also will recognize all New Hampshire veterans who served during the Korean War period, especially Marines from the Lakes Region.

The event coincides with the 60th anniversary of the truce the United States, its United Nations allies, the Republic of South Korea and the Communist nations of North Korea entered into on July 27, 1953, to end armed fighting. The actual end of the war did not occur until Jan. 31, 1955, with the signing of the armistice between the warring nations.
Casualties among United Nations allies totalled 474,000 dead, wounded, missing in action, and prisoners of war. They include U.S. casualties of 36,516 combat and 2,830 non-combat deaths, 92,134 wounded, 8,176 missing in action and 7,245 prisoners of war.
An estimated 11,500 New Hampshire men and women served in the U.S. military during the Korean War era. The number who died has never been verified.

Dress code for the Gathering of Marines is military uniform, tuxedo, gown, formal dress or business attire. Cost is $45 per person. Reservations may be made by contacting Bob Patenaude, detachment commandant, at 603-253-7970; or by mail to Lakes Region Detachment, MCL, P.O. Box 764, Center Harbor 03226.
