CONCORD — Executive Councilor Ray Burton will be honored at the official opening of a new scenic overlook in the White Mountains on Friday.

A spokesman for Burton said the 18-term councilor plans to attend. It would be his first public appearance since he announced on Sunday that he will not seek reelection due to his continuing battle with cancer.

The new, $879,000 overlook and rest area is on Route 302 in Bretton Woods across from the Mount Washington Resort, in the heart of Burton’s council District 1.

Officials plan to dedicate a stone marker, honoring Burton, at the site.

Top officials expected to attend include Gov. Maggie Hassan, former Govs. John Lynch and John H. Sununu, as well as Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Kelly Ayotte.

The state Department of Transportation sent out invitations earlier this week “to the official opening of the new Mount Washington scenic overlook.”

The invitation says plans include an “honoring of Executive Councilor Raymond Burton.” It also says, “A reception will follow at the Mt. Washington Hotel.”

The contract with A.B. Logging, Inc., of Lancaster for the construction of the overlook was originally approved by the Executive Council in June for $704,000. The additional $175,000 was approved by the council on Oct. 2 to remove additional ledge from the site.

Executive Councilor Chris Sununu, R-Newfields, called the price “exorbitantly large,” and said DOT should not have authorized the additional work before the contract was approved.

State House Bureau Chief Garry Rayno contributed to this report.
