Closures set for Memorial Bridge this week

PORTSMOUTH — The Memorial Bridge will be closed to all traffic from midnight to 5 a.m. through Thursday this week.

Traffic will be restricted to one alternating lane in each direction from 7 p.m. to midnight.

The closures are needed to remount the refurbished Eagle and memorial plaque on the Portsmouth side of the original memorial bridge, honored as the statewide memorial for veterans of World War I.

According to information provided by Archer Western Contractors, the unassembled plaque and eagle is around two dozen separate pieces and weighs about 7,500 pounds.

The contractor said it may need to close the bridge the following week for the same duration of time depending on weather conditions and how well the 90-year-old adornment goes back together.
