MERRIMACK — A crossing guard was struck by a minivan Monday morning while directing traffic on Baboosic Lake Road near James Mastricola Upper Elementary School, prompting new drop-off procedures at the school.
Police said the crossing guard, Arthur Ducharme, 67, of 21 Bigwood Drive is recovering from his injuries.
“The New Hampshire State Police are handling the investigation and are looking into the cause of the accident,” local police said in a statement.
According to authorities, emergency personnel responded to the accident at 8:12 a.m. at the intersection of Baboosic Lake Road and School Street. Police said Ducharme was directing traffic into the elementary school when a 2012 Honda Odyssey van driven by William Tricoli II, 27, of 16 Forest Drive struck Ducharme.
Ducharme was taken to Elliot Hospital for undisclosed injuries that have been deemed non-life threatening.
A portion of the road was closed to traffic while police investigated Monday morning. As a result of the accident, police have implemented new drop-off procedures at the school.
“Student drop-off traffic for (JMUES) will not be allowed to stop, stand or park along Baboosic Lake Road at School Street, or within the school zone,” police said in a statement.
In addition, police will be directing traffic to make sure vehicles are steadily moving along.
