DERRY — Pinkerton Academy struck twice early and rode that lead to a 4-1 win over Bedford in the Division I field hockey quarterfinals Friday.
The defending champion Astros will face Salem in the semifinals Tuesday at Exeter High School.
The Astros were on the board after a minute when Julie Saltamartini took a pass from Jess McCully and tipped the ball past Bedford goalie Paige Noble.
Four minutes later, Pinkerton struck again. This time Erin Johnson scored with an assist from Kaylie DiCosmo.
Saltamartini scored again, this time unassisted, at the 19-minute mark, and the Astros led Bedford 3-0 at the half.
In the second half, Bedford made adjustments to keep Pinkerton from scoring but the Astros kept play in the Bulldogs end for most of the half.
Bedford committed numerous fouls in the penalty zone, giving Pinkerton penalty corners, but the Astros didn't capitalize until Erin Johnston scored with 8:50 remaining to make it 4-0.
Bedford spoiled Abbey Doherty's shut out bid as Kathlyn Rooney scored with just 15 seconds remaining to make the final 4-1.
Astros coach Jen Resmini said she was looking for full effort right off the bat and got it.
"We were looking for a 60-minute game," Resmini said. "We're very happy with our performance. It's been a long building process all season."
Bedford coach Steve Connors praised the game Pinkerton had. "They really outdid themselves," he said.
Connors was full of praise for his team. "They never gave up and fought hard. I'm very proud of how they played."
Salem 2, Merrimack 0: At Salem, Kiley Keenan and Rachel Denning scored five minutes apart in the first half and that was all the No. 3 ranked Blue Devils would need to knock off No. 6 Merrimack.
Amanda Travaglini and Mikaela Gauvain added the assists for Salem and goalie Meaghan Williams made six saves for the shutout.
Salem (13-2) moves on to the semifinals Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Exeter. Merrimack finished 7-7-1. Winnacunnet 3, Bishop Guertin 0: At Hampton, top-ranked Winnacunnet advanced to the semifinals and improved to 15-0.
Haley Merrill, Megan Chaste (assisted by Melissa MacLeod) and Madison Holt scored the goals for Winnacunnet. Kelly Mahoney made 14 saves in goal for the Cardinals (8-8).
