Monarchs felled by St. John's


 

The Manchester Monarchs were defeated for the first time in regulation this season, falling 3-2 to St. John's at Verizon Wireless Arena Friday night.

The Monarchs (5-1-3) and IceCaps (3-3-1) meet again today at 3 p.m. at the Verizon.

Trailing 3-1 in the third period, Manchester got a goal back with 4:17 remaining when Nick Deslauriers converted a cross-ice pass from Brandon Kozun to make it 3-2.

Manchester pulled goaltender Martin Jones late for an extra attacker, but could not net the equalizer.

The Monarchs led briefly. Linden Vey's second goal of the season gave Manchester a 1-0 lead 4:09 into the game. Tyler Toffoli and Derek Forbort provided the assists.

But St. John's answered just 39 seconds later when Carl Klingberg scored.

The IceCaps claimed a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal at 10:53 when Andrew Gordon banged a rebound chance home from close range.

St. John's extended to a 3-1 lead midway through the second period on Jason Jaffray's second goal of the season. Jaffray was loose in front and J.C. Lipon's pass from behind the net found him for the quick shot to beat Jones.

Londonderry's Ian O'Connor, who played with Manchester last season and began the year with the Monarchs, is now a member of the IceCaps. He registered one shot on goal Friday.
