USS Alexandria arrives at Portsmouth shipyard

The USS Alexandria arrived at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard with a crew of 133.

KITTERY, Maine - The submarine USS Alexandria arrived at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on Wednesday with 13 officers and 120 enlisted personnel.

The fast-attack, nuclear powered submarine will undergo various maintenance and system upgrades while at the shipyard. The engineered overhaul is expected to take about 19 months with a completion date in summer 2015.The submarine is the seventh 'improved' Los-Angeles class submarine and was commissioned in 1991. It is the third ship of the United States Navy to bear the name Alexandria.From October 2012 to April 2013 the submarine conducted a deployment to the United States Africa Command and European Command in support of national security interests and operations, according to information provided by the shipyard.
During the deployment, the submarine covered more than 34,000 nautical miles.Alexandria's host community is Biddeford, Maine.

It joins the USS Miami, the USS Topeka and ex-Memphis on the shipyard. Gary Hildreth, public affairs officer at the shipyard, said on average there are three to four submarines undergoing maintenance at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard at one
